Just bought my dream boat! A Montgomery 17

Just the other day I returned from a long non-stop drive from Maimi, it was about 9 hours one way. The reason for that little excursion was to pick up my new addiction, my Montgomery 17.

I have been looking for a Montgomery 17 for quite some time now, I posted about how I think it would be the perfect boat for me about 15 months ago here on my blog. After much time spent looking all over the internet a few times a week I finally found one that I made an offer on, a lowball offer to be honest. The original asking price was $3475 and I offered $2500 and ended up buying it for $2600.

There are a few things on the boat that need work but I am capable of doing all of the repairs myself. They are things like very small blisters covering up %75 of the bottom, the bottom needs paint, the rusted up centerboard needs repair, the swimladder needs to be installed, teak need refinshing and a few other cosmetic things.

The GREAT thing about this boat is that it came with lots of accessories that are all very high quality and things that I would have needed to buy anyway, and most of the stuff is brand new! I guess I will go into a little list here for my records and for everyone else interested.....
-Garmin GPSMAP 440S with all US Coastal Charts(like new condition, LNC) -New sidestays from Montgomery Boats - (2) West Marine (WM) Inflatable Life Vests (LNC) -New WM Inflatable Life Vest with intergral harness -New Fortress Stowaway FX-7 anchor with bag -New 15" Davis Windex -New WM Harness Tether -New WM Rechargable Eco Horn -New WM 3/8"x200' 3-strand Nylon Anchor Line -New Beckson Deck Plate Storage Bag -1.5 and 2.3 KGS Grapnel Anchors -New Quart of White Vivid Anti Fouling Bottom Paint -New Tube Radar Reflector -New Forespar 6'-12' Twistlock Spinaker Pole -New Domestic Sealand Porta-potti -LNC Prosport 6 Marine Battery Charger -LNC Shore Power Cable Set -New Boom Kicker -New WM Stainless Telescopic Swim Ladder -New 4" Nicro Solar Vent ----And all kinds of other extras!

When I arrived home I went through the boat cataloging all of the items. Then I jumped on the West Marine website and totalled up what all of these goodies would cost new and it was about $100 shy of what I paid for the boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so proud of my new investment!

This thing has some nice sails too! The main is in great condition with 2 sets of reef points. The jib is in good condition as is the beautiful spinaker! I have yet to have the chance to fly a spinaker but now I know my time is coming!

I am currently working on the boat and waiting for a few things to come in the mail before I take here out for the first time. More posts on that to come!

Glad you have a project. I was in Florida and saw the M-17 ad but neglected to look. Am a little envious!
We live in Montana but have stored a boat at my brother-in-law's near Birmingham during the summer. We use it in Florida in the fall and spring but sold it this spring.

Always looking for interesting boats. I had a Montgomery 15 that we trailed from British Columbia to the Florida Keys.

Good luck.

From a fellow M17 owner: You got a good deal. Enjoy your boat. I drove 3500 miles for mine. http://www.southworthsailor.com/2009/06/you-did-what.html

How are you getting on with your M-17?

Where do you live and sail? Might run into you when I am back east.

Well done on buying it and at such a good price. Hard to believe you got it for that when the accessories cost so much!

Well done!!
